What are Bisquick Sausage Balls?

I have always been a fan of sausage cheese balls and have tried a variety of recipes for them. I chose a sausage ball recipe made with Bisquick Baking Mix and absolutely fell in love with it.

This Bisquick sausage ball recipe is a crowd pleaser and always disappear at family get togethers. They have quickly become a requested appetizer for me to take to events, potlucks, and parties.

I first had these cheesy sausage balls at a party a friend of mine was having. They were so delicious that I just had to have the recipe.

I was surprised at how simple they are to make and are perfect for the most novice of cooks to master. The combination of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, Bisquick baking mix, and ground pork sausage make this appetizer as delicious as it is easy to make.

Bisquick Sausage Ball Ingredients

For these Bisquick Sausage Cheese Balls the number one ingredients is Bisquick Baking Mix. It is easily found in grocery stores in the baking isle in the same area as flour and baking mixes. If you are not able to find Bisquick then follow the directions below to make your own version.

  • 21/2 CupsBisquick Baking Mix. If Bisquick is not available to you or you have an aversion to using it then try substituting it with 2 cups of flour, 2 1/2 tsp of baking powder, and 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1PoundGround Pork Breakfast Sausage. I like to use the regular sausage. But if you like things spicy or sweet you can use a hot sausage or the maple flavored sausage. This recipe works best if the sausage is at room temperature. The colder the pork sausage the harder it is to blend it with the other ingredients. I like to remove the pork sausage from the refrigerator 45 minutes prior to mixing the Bisquick sausage balls.
  • 16OuncesShredded sharp cheddar cheeseIt is possible to use another type of cheese. I have used half sharp cheddar and half pepper jack cheese and it was delicious and had a nice kick to it.
  • 1/2CupWhole Milk. This brings the fat and adds to the flavor.
  • 1/2teaspoonGranulated Garlic
  • 1/2teaspoonOnion Powder
  • 1/2teaspoonItalian SeasoningIf you do not have Italian seasoning or like it feel free to add rosemary instead.

– Make sure to use a good quality ground sausage for maximum flavor.

– Don’t overmix the ingredients. Mix just until everything is well combined to avoid tough sausage balls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bisquick Sausage Balls be made ahead of time?

Bisquick Sausage Balls can absolutely be made ahead of time!

I think this is the perfect finger food to start off your get together with family and friends. I will often make them up to a day ahead of my get together and store them in aluminum foil. To reheat the sausage balls place them into the oven in the aluminum foil at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes.

Once cooked the sausage balls do need to be refrigerated and can last in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Knowing that I can make this sausage balls Bisquick recipe ahead of time reduces my stress and allows me to balance my time better.

How to Keep Sausage Balls Warm For Party?

Are you planning a party and wondering how to keep your sausage balls warm? Well, worry no more because we have got you covered! Here are some tips on how to keep your sausage balls warm for your next party.

  1. Use a Slow Cooker

One surefire way to keep your sausage balls warm is by using a slow cooker. Simply make the sausage balls ahead of time and transfer them to the slow cooker on the “warm” setting until it’s time to serve. This will ensure that they stay hot and ready for guests throughout the night.

  1. Keep Them Covered

If you don’t have access to a slow cooker, another option is to use aluminum foil or plastic wrap to cover them up. This will help retain heat and prevent them from getting cold before serving.

  1. Use Chafing Dishes

Chafing dishes are perfect for keeping food warm at parties. They come in various sizes and shapes, allowing you to choose one that’s suitable for your needs. Place your freshly made sausage balls in chafing dishes over sterno fuel cans that will heat the dish from below.

  1. Preheat Your Oven

If you’re making fresh batches of this sausage balls Bisquick recipe during the party, preheating your oven before placing them inside can also help keep them warm longer than if they were placed into a cold oven.

  1. Serve Them Freshly Made

Lastly, if none of these options work out for you or if you want something simpler, consider serving fresh batches of sausage balls throughout the night instead of having everything made all at once beforehand.

Do Bisquick Sausage Balls need to be refrigerated?

It is possible that there may be some sausage balls left over. If that happens rejoice because it is my humble opinion that these taste even better the next day. Then the question is how to store left over sausage balls.

If there are some Bisquick sausage balls left over then it is recommended that they be refrigerated. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and frozen for up to 3 months. I have to say that they never last in my house longer than 3 days.

When serving this appetizer it is best warm. When you want to reheat them simply remove from the refrigerator or freezer and place in aluminum foil to reheat.

Sometimes I don’t have time to place them into an oven or I want to keep them warm I use warming trays or a slow cooker with a lid set on low.

Why are my sausage balls so dry?

When making your sausage balls they should be sticky to the touch, not too dry. Most Bisquick sausage ball recipes call for 3 cups of Bisquick, but I have altered this a bit. I have found that using only 2 1/2 cups of Bisquick helps to keep these from drying out. Here are some more tips if you need help to determine why your sausage balls are so dry.

  1. Overcooking: It is possible that you cooked the sausage balls for too long or at too high a temperature. This can cause them to become dry and tough.
  2. Lack of moisture: Sausage balls are typically made with a combination of sausage, cheese, and breadcrumbs. If you did not add enough cheese or liquid (such as milk), then the mixture may be too dry.
  3. Using lean meat: If you used a leaner variety of sausage, it may not have enough fat content to keep the meatballs moist while cooking.
  4. Not mixing well enough: When making sausage balls, it is important to mix all the ingredients thoroughly so that they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture. If any ingredient is left unmixed, it could result in pockets of dryness.
  5. Storage conditions: Even if your sausage balls were perfectly moist when you made them, storing them improperly (such as leaving them uncovered in the fridge) can cause them to dry out over time.

To avoid dryness in your sausage balls going forward, try adjusting these factors until you find the right balance for your recipe!

Do you have to use Bisquick?

If you do not have Bisquick on hand you can substitute it with 2 1/2 cups of flour, 2 1/2 tsp of baking powder, and 1/2 tsp of salt. Gluten free Bisquick is also an option for this dish if you are following a gluten free diet.

I have only used Bisquick to make this recipe and the ease of using it makes it my go to every time. The fact that these Bisquick Sausage Balls are quick to make is half of their appeal.

And for me the other half of their appeal is in just how delicious they are.

How do I cook Sausage Balls?

If you are like me and you want to a tried and true sausage ball recipe with Bisquick then I have got you covered.

I prefer to cook these Bisquick Sausage Balls in a preheated oven at350°F. I tend to wait until I have mixed all of the ingredients and I am forming the sausage balls to turn the oven on.

One of the best parts of this recipe is that all of the ingredients can be made in the same mixing bowl. Once measured the ingredients can just be thrown into the bowl and blended.

My preference is to remove the sausage from the refrigerator a good 45 minutes prior to making this recipe. This ensures that it is softer and easier to manipulate.

While it is possible to use mixing bowls to make this recipe my preference will always be to use a stand alone mixer. It is just easier and ensures that all of the ingredients are completely mixed.

Never underestimate the power of a quality baking tools at hand. I prefer to mix this recipe by using a standing mixer like this one to ensure that all of the ingredients are blended well together.

I use the heavy paddle for this recipe and again I find that if the sausage is at room temperature that works best.
