Foreclosure Homes for Sale in Lafayette, LA: What You Need to Know

Lafayette was once inhabited by the indigenous Atakapa-Ishak, Choctaw, Chitimacha, and Opelousa tribes. However, by the mid-18th century, the French, Spanish and Acadian colonists had established themselves along the Vermilion River, giving the city its name, Vermilionville. In 1184, the town was renamed Lafayette after an American and French Revolutions hero.

To keep the French language and culture at the forefront of the city for the development, preservation, and utilization of the French, the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) was created in 1968 and is still active today. In 1983 a vast restoration project was launched to restore downtown Lafayette and has helped preserve this area, attracting new business and more residents and visitors.
