Primer is like foundation for your eye makeup. It helps it go on smoother, reduces creasing, and helps your makeup stay longer.
I notice a big difference when I use eyeshadow primer versus when it I don't use it. It really helps get an even layer so my eyeshadow looks better.
It also helps my makeup last longer. With my homemade eyeshadow primer, my eyeshadow lasts all day!

If you run out of eyeshadow primer and don't have time to make more, then you can use one of the following products.
- Aloe vera gel
- Concealer
- Foundation
- Lip gloss
- Highlighter
- Arrowroot powder
Can You Put on Eyeshadow Without Primer?
Yes, you can definitely use eyeshadow without primer. However, a good primer helps prevent creases and caking.
Primer also helps hold the pigment so your eyeshadow lasts longer.
If you are going out or need your makeup to look good for hours, then I highly recommend using eyeshadow primer.

Making homemade eyeshadow primer is easy, and it works great. I have three recipes: one with clay for oily eyelids, one with foundation that's easy to make, and a lip balm eyeshadow primer.
Should I Put Foundation on Eyelids?
Technically, yes you can. However, using foundation as a substitute eyeshadow primer isn't the best thing to use.
Foundation can be heavy, and it can settle in the fine lines. It can also make your eyeshadow crease.
If you do want to use foundation in a pinch, use my recipe below to dilute it with other ingredients so it won't crease your makeup.
How Do You Keep Eyeshadow From Creasing Without Primer?
I highly recommend primer or learn how to make eyeshadow primer with these easy recipes. Otherwise, you can use a setting powder or even arrowroot powder.
Use a stiff brush when you apply your eyeshadow. Set your makeup with a setting spray.

Clay Eyeshadow Primer Recipe for Oily Eyelids
If you have oily eyelids, then eyeshadow primer is a must. Without it, the natural oil on your lids will dissolve your makeup.
My eyeliner wouldn't last more than an hour. Then I started using an eyeshadow primer made for oily lids.

The clay and the arrowroot powder in this recipe absorb excess oily. Aloe is not oily, and it works to provide a flat surface for your eyeshadow.

Homemade Eyeshadow Primer Recipe for Oily Eyelids Ingredients
- 1/4 teaspoon bentonite clayor kaolin clay
- 1/4 teaspoon arrowroot powder
- 2 teaspoons aloe vera gel

Mix all ingredients well and store in a small container with a lid. I like to use a lip gloss container.
Foundation Homemade Eyeshadow Primer Recipe
This recipe is easy because you probably have all of the ingredients. While you can use either foundation or concealer alone as an eyeshadow primer in a pinch, they do tend to get thick and cause your shadow to clump up or crease.
However, you can dilute them with a body butter or aloe vera gel. If you have oily eyelids, I recommend just using shea butter instead of body butter.
Foundation Homemade Eyeshadow Primer Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon liquid foundation
- 1 teaspoon concealer
- 1 teaspoon unscented body butter without fragrance or essential oils
- a few drops aloe vera gel
Foundation Homemade Eyeshadow Primer Directions
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in a covered container. I like to use small lip balm pots for this homemade eyeshadow primer recipe.
Homemade Eyeshadow Primer With Lip Balm
This one uses a premade lip balm. Just make sure that you use a natural one with no fragrance or essential oils.
Again, this may not be the best eyeshadow primer recipe for oily lids because of the lip balm.
Homemade Eyeshadow Primer With Lip Balm Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon natural lip balm
- 1 teaspoon arrowroot powder
- 1 teaspoon liquid foundation
Homemade Eyeshadow Primer With Lip Balm Directions
Melt the lip balm in the microwave for a few seconds until soft. Add the arrowroot and foundation. Stir well.
