15 Slow Cooker Dinner Recipes | Gimme Some Oven (1)

It’s that time of year again. The time when we sadly bid all those lovely summer tomatoes adieu, and turn on the slow cooker. As summer fades into fall and the nights grow cooler, there isn’t much more comforting than coming home after a long day’s work to a house permeated with the smell of dinner simmering away.

These one-pot dishes are perfect week night go-to’s because they practically make themselves. I like to call recipes like these “hibernation food.” They’re warm, filling, and satisfying, and the best part is you can do just about all your prep in the morning or the night before, so you barely have anything to mess with later.

I’ve scavenged high and low for 15 of the best slow cooker suppers in the food blogosphere, and wrangled recipes like buffalo chicken pasta, turkey chili baked potatoes, and butternut squash soup with maple roasted chickpeas. Hope you guys enjoy, and happy slow-cooking!

This looks tasty but might I suggest that you swap cage-free organic for pastured organic. From what I know, it seems like a kinder option!

FAQs

Can I use an oven instead of a slow cooker? ›

In comparison, when using an oven as a slow cooker, you'll typically set the temperature between 325°F (similar to the low setting) and 375°F (resembling the high setting). Opt for a heavy, oven-safe pot with a tight-fitting lid, like a Staub or Le Creuset Dutch oven, to mimic the moisture retention of a slow cooker.

What is the oven temperature equivalent to a slow cooker? ›

How to use an oven as a slow cooker substitute: Preheat the oven to about 160 C. Follow the slow cooker recipe, but use a baking dish with a lid instead of a crockpot or slow cooker. If the recipe calls for slow cooker setting, then divide the cooking time by 4.

Can you slow cook in an oven? ›

Can you slow cook in an oven? - Quora. Yep. That's basically BRAISING (just without the frying, though if it's meat, definitely fry it). All you need is a decent pot with a cover, a good pre-heated oven, some meat and veggies or a bit of moisture, some time, and VOILA.

What temperature do you slow cook meat in the oven? ›

Slow-roast

Best cooked at 150-170C, recipes that require slow-roasting are trickier to control using a domestic oven. Brown the joint first to give it a bit of colour, cook it covered on low, then turn up the heat at the end to brown the meat.

Is it cheaper to slow cook in oven or slow cooker? ›

Slow cookers typically cost less to run than an oven. They won't necessarily save you money compared with using an induction hob, or even a gas hob. Making exact comparisons is difficult, because there can be lots of variables, such as the type of hob and how you use it.

How do you mimic a slow cooker on the stove? ›

If you don't have a slow cooker, you can slow cook right on stovetop using a cooking pot that has a heavy build (like a Dutch oven) so it can disperse heat evenly to the food cooking inside. You should cover it well with a lid, keep the heat low and keep checking food in between so it does not run out of liquid.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Why is a slow cooker better than an oven? ›

Not only are slow cookers ideal for people who want to leave dinner to simmer away and attend to other errands, they work out to be one of the cheapest appliances to cook with in the kitchen. The electricity usage of an electric oven is estimated to be around two to 2.2kWh, compared to a slow cooker at just 0.7kWh.

What can you use in place of a slow cooker? ›

To mimic a slow cooker, you can use a dutch oven or covered casserole dish in a very low oven preheated to 200° Fahrenheit (United States) or 95° Celsius. Some new wall ovens and ranges include a preset “slow cook” function, then automatically switch to “keep warm” when the cooking time is over.

Can you cook meat low-and-slow in the oven? ›

With this low-and-slow method you simply set your oven to the temperature you want your joint to reach and let the meat do the work. The good thing is once the temperature is reached, the meat won't cook any further, so you can't overcook it! It's actual science.

Can you slow cook meat at 200 degrees? ›

Preheat oven to 200°. Place roast on a wire rack set inside a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of meat registers 118°–120° for medium-rare, about 2½ hours. Let rest 1 hour (internal temperature will continue to climb to 125°–130°).

Is it safe to cook meat at 250 degrees? ›

Some people worry that cooking foods at a low temperature for a long time in a slow cooker or in a slow oven is unhealthful. But it's OK. Cooking meat for four hours at 250 degrees does not present a health risk and will not “incubate” bacteria. Commercial slow-cookers heat at between 200 and 300 degrees.

How long to cook meat at 400 degrees? ›

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub steak with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Transfer steak to the oven and roast for 10-12 minutes, or until desired doneness is reached. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

What is a good substitute for a slow cooker? ›

While a slow cooker offers convenience, it's not the only route to slow cooking. With alternative methods like Dutch ovens, stovetop simmering, oven baking, pressure cooking, and utilising crockery, you can still savour the joys of slow-cooked meals. The results will be worth the wait.
